George R. R. Martin has definitely outdone many of the fantasy writers of his day with A Song of Ice and Fire. This series follows a fantastical story of a variety of characters all trying to make their way in their respective lives and homelands. The characters each share the books and detail different parts of the story from their own points of view. Though not all the characters meet and not all the stories tie together they do all deal with much of the same things and many of the same types of events throughout the books.
The World of Ice and Fire
In the world that this book takes place in there are no set seasons in the same way as we see them today. Instead, the seasons take place over periods of years at a time. Therefore the ‘summer’ as it were, may last for several years before the ‘winter’ takes over again. There is no telling how long the seasons will last or how severe they may become as they continue on and the characters must attempt to survive through these strange and uncertain times and worlds.
The characters in this world are doing what just about any persons would do when attempting to live out their lives. They are simply trying to survive and trying to destroy their enemies by whatever means necessary. Those from each continent in the world must struggle to achieve the tasks required for mere survival but to thrive they must accomplish so much more. Throughout each of the books in this series more and more characters become important and more and more events occur in each characters life. They must all face difficulties and they all must face adversity in order to make it through the world.
The first novel in this series was published several years ago and yet the story continues and has not been finished yet. In this grouping you will find the first few books but you’ll still have to wait to find out the true conclusion and the ending of this world for all the characters that live there. Things will continue to change and the world will continue to fight against them but the strong will definitely be able to carry on. Survival of the fittest has an even more powerful meaning in this story of intense survival and extensive obstacles to triumph over adversity.
